Howdy speedgolf family!
You’re reading This Week in Speedgolf. Side effects may include increased appetite, restless leg syndrome, sweaty palms, and the desire to experiment with wedge putting.
Here’s what’s happening in speedgolf this week.
» Don't call it a dynasty! Palmbergs dominate at Swedish Champs
We knew Carl Palmberg was good a year ago when he beat top-20 speedgolfers Henrik Honkalehto and Joakim Wikland to take his first Swedish title. But this past weekend, Carl took it to another level.
After a rainy, blustery round 1, Carl led Wikland by only 6 seconds. With clearer conditions on day 2, the defending champ torched the competition and the course with three birdies on the second nine, shooting 71 (-1) in 41:26 = 112:26, a Swedish national best and new course record at Allerum GK. The family theme continued as Carl’s sister Majken Palmberg shaved 5 minutes (!) off the Swedish Women’s record as she carded an 83 in 57:46 = 140:46 en route to winning her first Swedish Championship.
The only Palmberg in the competition who didn’t win was father Mikael Palmberg, who took second place in the Senior division behind the newly-50-year-old Joakim Wikland. A first-ever junior division, won by Allerum local Ivar Lyberg, underlined Sweden’s talent pipeline.
Things are heating up in European speedgolf as we head toward the first-ever European Open in August.
